A friend on the mainland is planning her family’s visit to Kaua’i and told me how sad she was that the Kamalani Pavilion and its artwork had burned down. Since this will be her first visit, I’m not sure where she heard about the pavilion, maybe a recent update of a visitor’s guide mentions it.

Queen’s Bath in Princeville is notorious for its change of moods. It’s one of those controversial places outed by the Kaua’i Revealed guidebook as an undiscovered gem: a turquoise and emerald pool set in black lava with views of Bali Hai. Except it’s also a lava bench on the North Shore of Kaua’i exposed to [...]

I don’t usually mention events on this blog (since I don’t write often enough) but this is one of my favorite events on Kaua’i, and I urge anyone who can make it to go see it.

Earth Day (April 22nd) was last Tuesday, and thanks to my daughter, I was actually encouraged to do something. Her preschool had planned to go to a local beach and pick up trash, so I joined them. We’re a one-car household, and I didn’t have the car, so I did the right thing and bicycled [...]

The octopus tree is one of those non-native species that most people see as typical of a tropical climate like Hawaii. Known as Schefflera and umbrella tree on the mainland, many people recognize it as a typical house plant that grows wild here. But most mainlanders have never seen it in bloom, and right now [...]

I had several reservations about this meeting. First, the meeting announcement in the newspapers revealed that it was really all about the “unified command” [...]

I was just reminded that Kauai’s civil defense sirens are tested on the first working day of every month at 11:45 a.m. with a continuous 1-minute tone. The sirens are located along the coasts and in populated areas inland to warn people of tsunamis mostly, but also [...]
