The face is sort of an artefact, because the most prominent feature, the eye, is purely made up of arbitrary shading of the Wailua Houselots neighborhood. I live in that neighborhood, so I still like to think I am in the eye of the warriror. Although I suppose the rest of the outline, without any urban shading, still suggests a face.

My wife said she had heard it called an outline of Madame Pele, but I can't find any references in a quick Google search. But I realize that since pre-contact Hawaiians didn't have maps in this way, it is a modern interpretation. I called it a warrior just because the gray urban area of Lihue looks like a mustache. I've also heard that Kauai is shaped like a human heart, if you rotate the shape 90 degrees counter-clockwise.

About the NG article, I heard it did appear in the recent print edition, where I suppose all the good photos are to be had. It's probably too late now, but you, Joan, should submit your own article about Na Pali, Kauai, or Hawaiian sovereignty to the NG--I liked the articles you linked to from your site. I would be very interested to see NG take a good look at what's going on culturally and environmentally in Hawaii these days.

Thanks for sharing your photo of the assembled map. I also have that set of maps and was quite struck when I put them all together to see the face you describe. It does make you wonder.

And thanks for posting the National Geo article on Na Pali. Yet another disappointing, Kauai-light kind of piece — only this time in a publication from which one would normally expect far more depth and accuracy.
